As you start the game, you'll be able to learn the ropes through Deer Hunter Tournament's in-game tutorial. The game features a restrictive bag limit system, which means if you only have bags for elk and deer, you can't shoot anything else. Attempting to shoot animals that you don't have bags for or killing more than the allotted amount will make you an illegal hunter. Adding to this is the fact that certain catches are worth more than others. Deer with plentiful and symmetrical antlers will net you many points, whereas non antler deer will leave your trophy wall with something to be desired.
Even though the title is Deer Hunter Tournament, there are plenty of other animals beside deer. Throughout your treks you'll track down wild turkeys, bears, mountain lions, and more. Smaller animals go down easily and don't pose much of a fight, but the larger animals are harder to kill. Some of the carnivorous predators will even attack you. In addition to these are creatures that you aren't allowed to attack; rare birds, for instance, are a big no-no. Also, you can't shoot animals when they're in the water as that will make you an illegal hunter. Bullets can easily bounce in the water.
Even though you can't take shoot Mr. Moose while he's taking a bath, there are a couple of other tricks you can use. You can attract herbivores by dropping snacks on the ground. There are also various devices that allow you to call different animals.
Once you do have an animal in your sights, you better make sure you're extra cautious. Once they know you know that they know you are tracking them, they'll quickly scamper out of there. Even though this isn't the traditional stealth-action game, it does help to go prone when going in for the kill. However, if you are spotted, you'll quickly realize that the bumpy and hilly terrain will often aid animals in their escape. It doesn't help your cause that all of these animals have a heightened sense of smell. To offset this, you're going to have to pay attention to the wind patterns. You have a wind meter attached to your compass that helps you avoid passing on your human odor. It also helps not to fart. Silent but deadly doesn't work in the world of Deer Hunter Tournament.[/quote]
